How to Move and Find a Storage Company
♫ Saturday, November 6th, 2010A decision to move is not an easy one, especially if you have been in the same location for several years. If you are not moving yourself, the next step is to contact a moving company. Unless one is moving directly into another home it is important to determine if this moving company has storage arrangements where they can store your belongings for a certain or indefinite length of time.
If, after leaving your previous home, you find that it will be several weeks before it is possible to move into your new dwelling how and where does one find adequate storage? Fortunately, today there are moving companies that provide storage if a person is unable to get immediate occupancy to their new dwelling.
Some of these companies use what is known as a ‘pod’ where one’s belongings are moved in a box-car type container and can be stored at the company’s property for an indefinite length of time. Storage fees are charged each month until the property is moved.
If the moving company does not have storage then it is necessary for anyone moving to arrange for storage prior to moving. The moving company will then take the items directly to the storage area where arrangements must be made to allow them to unload into this space. It is important that the owner be there in order to place a padlock on the storage unit to protect their belongings. A heavy, strong padlock is preferred as small ones are easy to remove.
When a person is moving and does not know the area it is very important to find a storage company that is reliable and has safe guards against theft and/or fire. Randomly selecting a company from the phone book, without investigating, is not a good idea. If there is a reliable storage company in the city you are moving from talking to them might reveal there is a similar company in the new location.
Even then, storage units vary from area to area and, for the safety of your belongings, it is important that you are aware of its reputation. Often one can find this information on the Internet where people are able to submit their opinions regarding the storage company in question. This will tell you if anyone was unhappy with them.
Storage companies, today, are much more reliable and safe than in previous years. There is usually a high fence, with rolled wire on top, as well as re-enforcement bars between the units. Some have a caretaker on the premises. This helps to protect against any loss by theft, however, most storage companies have large signs that they are not responsible for theft or fire.
Signing a lease agreement is regular procedure but reading it carefully is a must. The agreement is binding and, when going to remove the unit’s contents, one might find there are extra charges that the lessee was not aware of.
